FAIRFIELD, Calif. — The University of San Diego men's golf team competed in the first and second rounds of the 2026 West Coast Conference Tournament Friday at Green Valley Country, just north of the Bay Area.
The first three rounds consist of stroke play before the semifinals and championship matches will compete in match play.
Through 36 holes, the Toreros sit in second place, highlighted by shooting 12-under par in the second round. Here's a recap of both rounds from Friday's action on the course.
ROUND 1
San Diego began its opening round on the back nine. Ultimately, the team shot -2 and sat in a tie four fourth place with San Francisco.
Reid Piron was the first Torero out on the course. Piron parred the first five holes before going bogey-birdie on the par-5 15th and 16th holes, leading to an even par 36 through his first nine holes. Then on the front nine, despite a double bogey on the par-4 first, he bounced back with consecutive birdies on the next two holes, before an opening round 2-over 73.
You Seong Choi followed and shot an even par 71. Despite making three bogeys through his first six holes, he recorded an eagle on the par-5 16th and birdied the par-4 18th to quickly get back to even par.
Choi then bogeyed the opening hole of the first hole before getting that stroke back ion the par-4 third before parring out for an even par round.
Cooper Humphreys teed off at 8:52 a.m. He shot a one-over 72. Although the sophomore bogeyed his opening hole, he birdied both of the par-5s on the 15th and 16th holes. Before a bogey on the 18th to come in at even par. On the back nine, Humphreys got to 1-under on a birdie on the par-5 third before falling back from a double bogey on the par-4 eighth.
Reed Arnaldo then teed off. He started out strong, by being 3-under through the first seven holes. He birdied the par-3 13th before matching Humphreys with birdies on 15 and 16. Despite a bogey on 18 and double bogey on the first, he got back into the red numbers with a birdie on the third despite a bogey on the par-5 8th before a par on his final hole for an even par 71 and finished tied for Choi.
In the final grouping of the opening round, Ian Maspat teed off. Maspat had a bogey-free back nine, with birdies on the par-4 12th and the par-5 16th.
As he made the turn to the front nine, Maspat bogeyed the first and the fourth, both par-4s. However after both bogeys he would answer back. The graduate student birdied the second and third holes and also carded a three on the par-4 sixth to get to 3-under par and be inside the top five individually going into the second round.
ROUND 2
After shooting 2-under in the morning, San Diego caught fire in the afternoon with the best team round of the day. USD shot 12-under par and get to 14-under for the tournament and be two strokes of Pepperdine heading into Saturday's third round.
The Toreros were highlighted by their top two scorers in Maspat and Arnaldo. Maspat shot 7-under 64 to jump to 10-under and have the lead.
Maspat, who shot a final round 6-under 66 a year ago in the conference tournament on the same Green Valley course, had one bogey on his second round scorecard as part of a 7-under 64 to take a four shot lead.
His round was stamped with USD's second eagle of the day on the third hole. That was part of a front nine where Maspat closed with a three straight birdies before a par on his final hole of the day to close at 10-under par.
Despite a bogey on the opening hole of his second round, Arnaldo did not give up a stroke the rest of the way. He shot 5-under par the rest of the way, including three straight birdies on the front nine to get to 5-under for the tournament and sit in a tie for ninth place heading into the third round.
In Choi's back nine, he bookended it with bogeys but had bounced back with birdies on the par-4 11th and two in a three-hole stretch on 15 and 17 for a1-under 35.
On the front nine, he answered a bogey on the second with two birdies on 3 and 4 to record a 3-under 69 for the round and jump up to 2-under through 36 holes to be in a tie for xx place heading into the third round.
Humphreys opened with the team's only birdie of the second round on the 12th. Outside of a double bogey on the 16th, he recorded pars in each of his final 11 holes to be at 2-over heading into the third round.
Piron was first to tee off in USD's afternoon session. After starting his round with six consecutive pars, the freshman logged his first bogey of the second round on the 16th. He then made two consecutive birdies on holes No. 2 and 3, avenging two bogeys to end his back nine and a double bogey on the first before finishing the round at 2-over 74.
UP NEXT
San Diego continues play in the WCC Tournament for the third and final round Saturday. If the Toreros are one of the top four in team scoring, they will advance to Sunday's action, beginning with the semifinals Sunday morning before the championship match in the afternoon.
Both the semifinals and championship matches will be played using match play, instead of stroke play. As a result, the team's players will go head-to-head to determine the conference champion Sunday.
