LeCharls McDaniel begins his first year on the USD coaching staff. A coach with a wealth of experience, both at the NFL and college levels, McDaniel will oversee the Torero wide receivers. McDaniel spent the past ten years on the San Diego State coaching staff. Overall he spent a total of fourteen years on Montezuma Mesa, having also coached there in 2002 and from 1994-1996.
During his time with SDSU, McDaniel coached six players that were NFL Draft picks -- Brice Butler (2013 pick, Oakland Raiders), Vincent Brown (2011 pick, San Diego Chargers), DeMarco Sampson (2011 pick, Arizona Cardinals), Chaz Schilens (2008 pick, Oakland Raiders), Brett Swain (2008 pick, Green Bay Packers), and J.R. Tolver (2003, Miami Dolphins). Additionally he coached Kassim Osgood, a two-time NFL Pro-Bowler.
During his career he has coached in seven Bowl Games, five with SDSU and two with Oregon State. With the Aztecs he coached in the 2014 Poinsettia Bowl, the 2013 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, the 2012 Poinsettia Bowl, the 2011 New Orleans Bowl, and the 2010 Poinsettia Bowl. With Oregon State he coached in the 2004 Insight Bowl and the 2003 Las Vegas Bowl.
Additional coaching stops at both the college and professional levels include Oregon State (Special Teams/Tight Ends, 2003-04), California (Special Teams, 2001), Washington Redskins (Special Teams, 1998-2000), Phoenix Cardinals (Receivers, 1993), Cal Poly (Secondary/Special Teams, 1989-1991), San Diego Chargers (Assistant Special Teams, 1989-1991), and Hartnell College (Secondary/Special Teams, 1986-1988).
McDaniel signed with the Redskins as a free agent in 1981 and spent four years in the NFL (Redskins 1981-82 and New York Giants 1983-84). He was a member of Washington's Super Bowl XVII champion team. A star defensive back, McDaniel led Cal Poly to the NCAA Division II national title in 1980. He received his bachelor's degree in social sciences from Cal Poly in 1981.
McDaniel and his wife, Sheryl, have a son and two daughters.
