Nadia Abdala enters her fourth season leading the USD women's tennis program in 2025-26 after being named head coach in June 2022. A former professional player and standout collegiate athlete, Abdala has brought international playing experience, strong recruiting connections, and a passion for developing players both on and off the court to Alcala Park in 2014, also previously serving as a USDÂ assistant coach for eight years.Â
Since taking the helm, Abdala has guided USD women’s tennis to historic heights. She was named WCC Coach of the Year in 2025 and 2023 and honored as the ITA Southwest Region Coach of the Year in 2023. Under her leadership, the Toreros won the WCC title for the first time ever in 2025, reached a program-best No. 12 national ranking in 2024, qualified for the ITA Indoor National Championships for the first time in program history in 2023, and reached the NCAA Tournament second round twice.Â
She's led San Diego to reach the nation's top-40 rankings in each of the last five seasons, while the Toreros reached four straight NCAA Tournaments for the first time since the turn of the decade and advanced to the second round in each of her first two seasons in charge (2023 and 2024).
In 2025 Abdala led USD to it's first West Coast Conference Regular Season Championsip in program history. The Toreros swept the conference individual awards as Abdala was WCC Coach of the Year, Spaniard Claudia de las Heras was WCC Player of the Year (USD's first in 20 years), and Englishwoman Hannah Read WCC Freshman of the year. Kailey Evans also reached the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships, only falling to the eventual National Champion in three sets.Â
The 2024 season saw the Toreros reach a second straight NCAA Tourney second round, also finishing second in the conference regular season and tournament races. Most notably, the team hit a program-high ITA team ranking of No. 12, finishing 21st nationally. Claudia de las Heras was named ITA Southwest Region Most Improved Player under Abdala's direction. Â
In Abdala's maiden season as head coach of the Toreros in 2023 she was awarded the WCC Coach of the Year title for the first time. USD advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament while on the individual side Kailey Evans and Elizabeth Goldsmith were mainstays in the ITA rankings and played to the second round of the NCAA Doubles Championships.Â
As an assistant for the Toreros from 2014-22, Abdala made an impact with the program in the recruiting department, helping USD land some outstanding national and international players. Over her last three seasons as assistant coach, USD earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament three times and accumulated an overall record of 48-17 during that span. Â
Abdala is a three-time Southwest Region's Assistant Coach of the Year by the ITA (2015-16, 2018-19 & 2020-21), and she joined the Torero family for the 2014-15 season after competing on the WTA professional tour and coaching junior players in the La Jolla school system.
In 2020, Abdala helped USD land the nation's No. 14 recruiting class while in the COVID-shortened, both of USD's top players were ranked.
She guided Solymar Colling to All-American honors in 2019, in addition to appearances in the NCAA Singles Championships in 2021 and 2022.Â
Abdala was a standout player while at Arizona State University (2006-2010). She was lettered in four NCAA team appearances; three NCAA singles appearances and one doubles NCAA appearance. She was a part of a top 25 Pac-10 program, yet also found great success nationally in both doubles and singles. Abdala received a career-high ranking of No. 11 doubles (2008), while being tabbed at No. 19 in singles (2008).
After college, Abdala transitioned to the WTA professional tour. Achieving a ranking as high as No. 517 in the world in singles and No. 524 in doubles. She was recognized by the ITF for being one of three players to jump more than 500 spots in the rankings in 2011. Abdala competed twice in the international Federation Cup tournament representing Mexico.Â
Abdala is a 2020 masters graduate of USD’s Leadership Studies program. She is a 2010 graduate of Arizona State University and is from Mexico City, Mexico. She received her Bachelor's degree in Communications while at Arizona State.
