Academic Support Services

Personalized academic guidance for student-athletes across all 18 Torero varsity programs

Our Mission

The mission of Academic Support Services is to foster academic excellence and support the success of all student-athletes across our 18 varsity teams. Our Academic Support staff provides personalized guidance and resources that empower student-athletes to thrive in the classroom while meeting the demands of collegiate athletics.

Services include individualized academic counseling, assistance with class scheduling and graduation planning, major and minor exploration, assessment of students’ learning needs, and tutorial and learning support services. Through these comprehensive services, we help student-athletes develop the skills needed to achieve a healthy balance between academics and athletics while preparing for graduation and life beyond college.

Academic Counseling

A dedicated counselor from enrollment through graduation

We assign every student-athlete an Athletics Academic Counselor who provides guidance throughout their time at the University of San Diego. Our counselors work collaboratively with main campus advisors, faculty, and staff to ensure student-athlete success, assisting with class scheduling, graduation planning, and major and minor exploration.

They also track NCAA academic eligibility, monitor grades, provide progress updates to coaching staff, and offer one-on-one support for student-athletes.

Learning Support

A personalized plan built around each student’s needs

Our Learning Support Program provides individualized, one-on-one academic support through our Learning Specialist and Learning Assistants. The Learning Specialist evaluates the academic needs of incoming student-athletes using self-reported information and standardized assessments, then builds a personalized academic support plan.

Based on each student’s needs, we recommend individualized services, which may include weekly meetings with the Learning Specialist or a Learning Assistant.

The Learning Specialist works with students to strengthen academic skills, improve learning strategies, and develop the cognitive and executive functioning skills that support long-term academic success. Learning Assistants are graduate students, specially trained to provide individualized academic support and help student-athletes build effective time management, organization, study strategies, and other essential learning skills.

Together, our Learning Support team equips student-athletes with the tools and strategies they need to become confident, independent learners in the classroom and beyond.
