After 38 years at the helm of San Diego men's soccer, McFadden transitioned to an assistant coach under head coach Brian Quinn starting with the 2018 season. The longtime Torero leader not only was the first head coach for USD, but made it his own with numerous conference championships, double-digit NCAA Tournament appearances, and even a shot at the 1992 national championship when the Toreros reached the final.

From 1980 to 2017, McFadden and the Toreros won 385 games. He is currently 25th in Division I history in career victories as a head coach.

Building the program from the ground up literally from day one of its existence, McFadden has achieved levels of conference and national success. A nine-time WCC Coach of the Year, McFadden led the Toreros to nine WCC championships - including four in his final nine seasons as the head coach - and has tutored eight NSCAA All-Americans, 10 WCC Defensive Players of the Year, 11 WCC Offensive Players of the Year and six WCC Freshmen of the Year. He took USD to 14 NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure, including an NCAA Championship game appearance in 1992 and Elite Eight run in 2009..

McFadden arrived at USD in 1979 and fielded USD's first team in the fall of 1980. That same year he was quoted in the team's yearbook as saying: "I have no doubts that in the near future the University of San Diego will become a force to be reckoned with in Southern California intercollegiate soccer." How prophetic his words turned out to be.

McFadden played collegiately at San Diego State, where he received a degree in history in 1976. That same summer he was with the San Diego Jaws of the North American Soccer League. He also coached at Mesa Junior College and Clairemont High prior to taking the reins of USD in the late 1970s.

A native of Donegal, Ireland, Seamus and his wife Davette have two daughters (Hadley & Rorye) and a son (Conor). Conor played for the Toreros from 2009 to 2012, helping the team win two conference titles.
