The University of San Diego women's basketball announced the signing of high school seniors Amber Sprague, Amanda Rego, Michelle Augustavo and Alice Russell to national letters of intent to join the Toreros in the 2004-05 season.
Head Basketball Coach Kathy Marpe commmented, "In all my years of coaching, we have never been able to sign all four of our top recruits. This is a dream class of impact players."
Amber Sprague, a 6'4 attends Mission Bay High School just down the street from USD. She is ranked by the All-Star Girls Report as the 49th best player in the country. A Street and Smith All-American Honorable Mention for the last 3 years, Sprague was invited this past summer to the USA Youth Development Festival and played for the West Team. As a sophomore, she attended the prestigious Nike All-American camp. Amber led her team in scoring with 19.9 points and 13 rebounds per game last year, named the Division III Athlete of the Year, and named First Team All-Western League for the third consecutive year. Being named to the Union Tribune All-Academic Team rounds out Sprague's accomplishments.
Coach Marpe stated, "Amber is an inside-outside scorer who has all the tools to be the best player in USD's history. Amber's long arms and athleticism make her a defensive terror and dominant rebounder. She can score in so many ways and has a great touch around the basket."
Amanda Rego also attends Mission Bay High School. She is a 5'9 point guard who averaged 17.2 points and 7.5 assists as a junior. Rego, a First Team All-CIF and Western League MVP, can light it up from the outside and also take her opponent off the dribble as well. Rego has been named to the Union Tribune All-Academic Team thus proving that she gets it done on the court and in the class-room.
"Amanda is a left-handed shooting point guard and completely ambidextrous passer and ball handler will make an immediate impact next year. Amanda knows how to get the ball to her teammates for the easy score and at the same time can create her own shot when we need a basket," commented Coach Marpe.
