In their home-opener at the Jenny Craig Pavilion, the USD men's basketball team (1-1) handed visiting UC San Diego a 74-35 defeat. Senior center Brice Vounang led four Toreros in double digits with 12 points, and head coach Brad Holland was able to get all 12 suited-up players into the game. Junior forward Corey Belser turned in a solid game with 11 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 steals. He was one shy of the school record in the steals department. USD returns Monday night to take on the Occidental Tigers in a 7:05 p.m. contest.
The Toreros went into intermission with a 30-15 advantage, then put the clamps on the Tritons in the first 7 minutes of the 2nd half with a 17-0 run that put the Toreros ahead 47-15 at the 13:07 mark. The closest UCSD got from there was within 29 points at 55-26 on a three-point play from Chris Randall.
Senior guard Brett Melton also chipped in with 11 points as he canned 4-of-8 shots from the floor and 3-of-7 from beyond the three-point arc. Nick Lewis came off the bench to score 10 points in 17 minutes of action.
For the game USD shot a blistering 59.6% from the field (28-47), 46.7% from three-point range (7-15) and 78.6% from the charity stripe (11-14). The Torero defense held the Tritons to 29.2% shooting (14-48) and outrebounded them 34-24. UCSD (0-1) was paced by Chris Randall and Robby Peters, both with 8 points.
