USD Basketball Completes Coaching Staff

Aug. 28, 2004

University of San Diego head men's basketball coach Brad Holland has completed his coaching staff for the upcoming 2004-05 season. With associate head coach Brian Fish heading to Creighton and second assistant Steve Flint choosing to leave the coaching profession, coach Holland had two positions to fill.

The newest member who will become USD's top assistant under Holland is George Tuttle. Tuttle comes to USD from Southern Utah where he was the top assistant this past season. Sam Scholl, who enters his fifth season with the staff, has been promoted to second assistant. Nick Earnest, who just completed his first year as Head Team Manager, has been elevated to assistant coach. Lastly, T.J. Brown, a volunteer assistant manager last year, has been promoted to Head Team Manager.

"Obviously I am very pleased to have the staff completed and be prepared for classes beginning September 2nd," said Holland, who enters his 11th year directing the USD men's basketball program. "I've known George for many years and he is a solid, well-rounded individual that knows the game. He'll help us immensely in the areas of recruiting and scheduling. Additionally, Sam Scholl will take on more of a major role with recruiting, Nick Earnest moves into a full-time assistant position and will take on more responsibilities, and T.J. Brown moves up from his volunteer position to Head Team Manager."

New assistant George Tuttle

This past season Tuttle completed his first year at Southern Utah University where he worked with all phases of the SUU program and head coach Bill Evans. Prior to his position with SUU, Tuttle spent several years working in private business while keeping his hands in coaching working with the FILA Summer Pro League in Los Angeles.

In the FILA league Tuttle served as head coach of the Moore Management West Coast All-Stars, selecting and coaching free agent professional players in both team and individual settings. He coached the team to a league title in the summer of 2000. He also has coaching experience at the collegiate level having spent four seasons on the staff at Cal State Fullerton (1993-97), two at Sheridan (Wyoming) College (1991-93) and one season as a graduate student assistant at Texas (1990-91). His first season at Cal State Fullerton (1993-94) was also coach Holland's final year with the Titans before he took the USD position for the 1994-95 season. While at CSUF Tuttle worked in all phases of the program, with an emphasis on recruiting, player development and defense.

Sam Scholl, who'll enter his fourth full-time year with the Toreros, will take on more responsibilities in the area of recruiting. This past year he worked closely with the guards and also had responsibility for film exchange, academics, scouting and the day-to-day operations of the program. Nick Earnest begins his second year with USD staff and first as a full-time assistant. As the Head Team Manager last year he assisted with the daily operations of the program, oversaw the student managers, and was in charge of the boys basketball camp. Prior to USD he was an Administrative Assistant for men's basketball with Wyoming (2002-03), Stephen F. Austin (2001-02) and Texas Christian University (1999-01). Additionally, he was a basketball teacher and coach at various U.S. campuses for youth basketball camps between 1998-99. T.J. Brown moves into the Head Team Manager position where he will assist with all of the daily operations of the office, oversee the student managers, and assist with the boys basketball camp.
