San Diego, Calif. - Coming off of a long layover, the University of San Diego took on unranked Furman University on Sunday and won by a slim margin, 4-3. The team did not play up to its potential and the girls were eager to get back out on the court and justify their national ranking. Tuesday afternoon, the No. 52 Toreros got the chance to showcase their true abilities by dominating visiting Hawai'i 7-0.
"When we played our match on Sunday, I think we lacked energy and something was missing," said junior Emma Murphy. "But then Sherri spoke to us just right before the [Hawai'I] match and told us to pick it up and I think it gave us energy, what Sherri said."
San Diego captured the doubles point in convincing fashion to start off the afternoon. The smooth play of senior Tara Livesay and the gritty determination of sophomore Brittany Reitz were too much for Kana Aikawa and Samantha Cappella to handle at No. 3 doubles, with the Torero duo winning 8-0. At No. 2 doubles, the junior tandem of Emma Murphy and Lauren Perl overwhelmed Chloe Bihag and Kimberly Curtis, as Perl's crushing groundstrokes and Murphy's precise volleys accounted for the 8-0 score.
In singles, the Toreros proved to be too strong for the Rainbow Wahine to mount a comeback. Lauren Perl was first off the court at the No. 3 spot, as her punishing forehand and backhand enabled her to come away with the easy 6-0, 6-0 victory over Justine Boutet. Lauren Kazarian finished second at the No. 4 spot, as Chloe Bihag was not able to deal with the 5-4 senior's all-court game. Junior Jenny Brown served and volleyed her way to victory, clinching the dual match with her 6-2, 6-1 triumph at the No. 5 position. Senior Tara Livesay, junior Emma Murphy, and freshman Helene Lindstrand won their respective matches to account for the final score. In addition, sophomore Jenna Anderson won her exhibition match to complete the sweep of the Rainbow Wahine.
San Diego evens its record to 3-3 while Hawai'i falls to 2-7 on the year. The Toreros return to action on Friday, March 4 when they will face off against No. 8 Washington at the USD West Tennis Courts.
