The University of San Diego men's tennis team traveled to Los Angeles to compete against #5 UCLA Friday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. UCLA defeated the Toreros, currently ranked 37th in the nation, 5-2.
In doubles action, UCLA's Philipp Gruendler and Benjamin Kohlloeffel posted an 8-6 victory over USD's Thomas Liversage and Pierrick Ysern. Jonas Mouly and Oscar Plotnik also dropped their match to the Bruin duo of Haythem Abid and Chris Surapol (8-6). Finally it was the Torero team of Mirza Koristovic and Matt Ozurovich that proved too much for the Bruins as they clinched their match over UCLA's Dehaine and Yovan by a score of 9-8 (4).
In the singles ladder, senior Pierrick Ysern, clinched a Torero victory with a 10-point tiebreaker defeat over UCLA's Benjamin Kohlloeffel, who is currently ranked third in the nation. Ysern, the 2005 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis national runner-up, came back after a 4-6 loss to tie the set at one game apiece with a convincing 6-3 win over Kohlloeffel. Ysern would go on to edge his opponent 10-8 in the final game.
The Toreros were able to get another point moments later when sophomore Thomas Liversage battled back to defeat Philipp Gruendler, 4-6, 7-5, (10-6).
