The USD "NBA Mafia" — Five former Toreros have become NBA head coaches, third most nationally behind only Indiana and North Carolina. The pipeline flows through four generations: Bickerstaff mentored Brown → Brown brought in Fizdale → the network grew. Coach Hank Egan (non-alumnus, USD HC 1984–94) is the connective tissue — his former Air Force player Gregg Popovich later hired him in San Antonio, which brought Brown and eventually Borrego into the Spurs system. In June 2026 Brown became the first Torero to win an NBA title as a head coach, ending the Knicks' 53-year championship drought.
