DAVIS, Calif. - The 13th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team suffered its first loss of the season, a 6-2 setback to UC Davis Sunday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
With the loss the Toreros drop to 5-1, but still claimed the three-game set winning the first two games Friday and Saturday. UC Davis moved one game back above .500 at 3-2 with the win.
The Toreros wasted no time in score jumping out to the early 2-1 lead after the first inning. Keoni Ruth got things started for USD with his single to left field, and moved to second on a Justin Snyder walk. Both Snyder and Ruth advanced one base on a throwing error by UCD starting pitcher Justin Fitzgerald. Ruth then came across for the first run of the game on a Daniel Magness ground out to the shortstop. Snyder then capped USD's scoring for the game on a throwing error by the UC Davis third baseman, scoring Snyder from third.
UC Davis took back one run in the bottom of the first on a Tyler LaTorre RBI single through the left side. UCD would knot the game at 2-2 in the second inning on an Evan Hudson RBI single to right field. The Aggies would then score three runs in the seventh inning and add one more run in the eighth inning to round out the scoring and claim the win.
Ricardo Pecina (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros allowing three runs on three hits. Bryan Evans picked up his first win of the season for the Aggies no runs on one hit in 2.2 innings of work.
The 13th-ranked Toreros will return to the diamond on Friday as they open play in the USC Public Storage Classic in Los Angeles, Calif. against Vanderbilt University at 2 p.m.
