USD To Celebrate The Life of Legendary Coach John "JC" Cunningham

Memorial service set for Friday, October 3 at The Immaculata Church

SAN DIEGO — The University of San Diego will honor the life and legacy of John "JC" Cunningham, the beloved baseball coach and longtime member of the Torero family, with a Celebration of Life on Friday, October 3 at 2:30 p.m. at The Immaculata Church on the USD campus. A reception will immediately follow.

Cunningham, who passed away earlier this month at age 88, left an indelible mark on USD Athletics and the San Diego community. Known as the architect of Torero baseball, he guided the program for 35 years and remained a central figure in the university for more than six decades.

During his coaching career, Cunningham amassed 843 victories, earned induction into multiple halls of fame, and coached numerous players who went on to professional baseball, including several who reached Major League Baseball. Beyond the numbers and his countless achievements, he was celebrated for his selfless service, mentorship, and unwavering love for the University of San Diego and its student-athletes.

"John Cunningham made an immeasurable impact on USD Athletics across a career unlike any other," said USD Associate Vice President and Executive Director of Athletics, Kimya Massey. "Nobody loved USD more than Coach Cunningham, and we are proud to celebrate his extraordinary life and legacy together with our community."

The Celebration of Life is open to family, friends, alumni, and the greater USD community, providing an opportunity to honor a man whose influence extended far beyond the field.
Cunningham is survived by his son, Geoffrey, a graduate of the University of San Diego.
