(San Diego, CA) - The USD men's tennis team (2-4) battled No. 60 UC Irvine this afternoon at the USD West Tennis Courts, but came up short in dropping a hard fought 4-3 decision. San Diego jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning two of the three doubles matches. In singles play the Toreros received wins from both Thomas Liversage at No. 1 and Dean Jackson at No. 2, and held a slim 3-2 advantage after the Anteaters won in straight sets at No. 3 and No. 4. In the final two matches on the court, the visitor's edged past the Toreros with three-set wins in highly competitive matches at No. 5 and No. 6. At No. 5, Nils Schive sent his match to a third set after earning a 7-6 (12-10) win in the second. UCI's Steven Stege won the deciding match, 6-2. On court six, Tamer Antabi also won the second set, but fell 7-5 in the final set to Ryan Mayer.
"I'm really proud of the way we competed down at the end of our lineup," said interim head coach David Anderton. "It was a extremely competitive match, and despite coming up a little short, we improved as a team today."
The Toreros return to the West Courts tomorrow to face the Cal Poly Mustangs in a 12:30 pm match.
