SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 75th-ranked University of San Diego men's tennis team defeated No. 69 Fresno State University, 4-3, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match at the West Tennis Courts.
The Toreros first captured the doubles point by snagging two of the three matches. In the No. 1 slot, the Torero tandem of Thomas Liversave and Chris Coetzee defeated Fresno State's team of Rudy Siwv and Tejesvi Veerepalli 9-8 (1). The Bulldogs then evened the doubles when the FSU team of Mirko Zapletal and AJ Kerin defated USD's team of Jose Manuel Munoz and Charl Wolmarans, 8-4. The Toreros then captured the doubles point with an 8-3 win as USD's Dean Jackson and Nils Schive defeated FSU's Denny Fafek and Taylor Leiby.
In singles action, the Toreros jumped out to a good start as Jackson cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 straight sets win over FSU's Sinwv. Liversage was the last player on, and after losing his first set, rallied to claim a 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 win in the No. 2 singles position over Zapletal to clinch the 4-3 win. Coetzee defeated FSU's Fafek in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
The Bulldogs then captured the final three singles points as Veerepalli took the No. 4 singles win over USD's Wolmarans, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. SIddharth Alapati then captured the No. 5 singles spot with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Munoz. The final single battle also went to Fresno State as Kerin defeated Schive, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (2).
