SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's basketball team has teamed up with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and over 600 high school, junior college, college, and AAU teams in the "Think Pink" initiative, designed to raise awareness for breast cancer. The Toreros will host their "Think Pink" event this Saturday in their home game against the University of San Francisco. Fans who wear pink will be admitted for free to Saturday's showdown with the Dons. The game is set for a 2 p.m. tip inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
The first 200 fans to the game will receive a free "Think Pink" t-shirt, and fans who wish to contribute to this cause can due so by stopping by the City of Hope Tent and make a donation per assist for the game.
The Toreros have teamed up with the City of Hope and New Days Dawon to help them raise money for breast cancer research.
The "Think Pink" initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.
The WBCA began "Think Pink" in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year of the "Think Pink" a success.
San Francisco enters the game with a 19-9 overall record and a 4-3 mark in the WCC after splitting a pair of games with the LA based WCC schools this past week, defeating Pepperdine 81-75 before falling to LMU 68-64 this past Saturday. The Dons and Toreros are even in the all-time series at 23-23 with the Dons winning the past two contests dating back to the WCC tournament this past season. USF defeated USD back on Jan. 12, 80-62, in San Francisco. The Dons are led by senior forward Dominique Carter who has a team-best 19.6 points per game average to go along with a 6.8 rebounds per game average. USF has three other players averaging double figures with Necolia Simmons averaging 11.4 ppg, Shay Rollins averaging 11.6 ppg and Heidi Heintz averaging 10.0 ppg. The Dons are under the direction of second-year head coach Tanya Haave. During her time on the Hill Top, Haave has posted an overall record of 23-30.
