(Anchorage, Alaska) - Washington State sophomore guard Kyle Thompson set a new 32-year Great Alaska Shootout record with 43 points as the Cougars dealt San Diego a 93-56 loss in the championship game. Thompson, named the tourney MVP, scored 31 of his points in the 2nd half and for the game made 8-of-13 threes and 16-of-24 from the floor. USD's lone player to reach double digits was guard Brandon Johnson (13 points) who was joined on the 10-player All-Tournament team by Chris Lewis and De'Jon Jackson.
WSU scored the game's first five points and led 12-3 four minutes into the game. A DeAngelo Casto dunk gave the Cougars a 29-13 lead with 8:14 to go before USD mounted a comeback in the closing minutes. Back-to-back threes by De'Jon Jackson and Brandon Johnson pulled the Toreros to within three at 33-30 with 1:59 left, but WSU's Reggie Moore added two treys of his own and Washington State led 39-32 at the half.
In the second half the Toreros scratched their way to within two at 45-43 on a short Clinton Houston jumper, but Thompson scored 8 points as WSU went on a 10-0 run to make it 55-43 with 14:31 to go. Following a Brandon Johnson three-pointer, the Cougars went on another 10-0 run and never looked back. Moore also reached double digits with 16 points.
WSU shot 62.5% from the floor (35-56) and 60% from three-point land (12-20). The Cougars also outrebounded the Toreros, 36-25 with Marcus Capers leading the way with 8. The Toreros managed to shoot just 34.5% from the floor and converted just 6 of 22 three-point attempts. USD returns home where they will take on San Diego State on Wednesday in a 7 pm contest at the JCP.
