SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 50 Toreros of San Diego won two of three doubles matches and five of six in singles to post a 6-1 victory over Cal Poly. The win improves USD's record to 3-3 on the year; the Mustangs dropped to 3-4 on the year.
In doubles play, the Toreros won the all-important doubles point by winning two of the three doubles matches. Dean Jackson and Chris Coetzee teamed up at No. 1 doubles for a 8-6 win over the Mustang duo of Andre Dome and Andrew Gerst. At No. 2 doubles, Nicola Bubnic and Nils Schive dealt Cal Poly's tandem of Sonesson-Wardman an 8-5 defeat to clinch the doubles point.
In singles play USD claimed five of the six matches led by Jackson's 6-4, 6-1 victory over Andre Dome at the No. 1 slot. Both Charl Wolmarrans (#2) and Nicola Bubnic (#4) won hard-fought three-set matches, and Chris Coetzee (#3) and Tom Wolff (#6) added straight set victories.
"I'm happy with the outcome today, especially the play of Dean at No. 1 and Chris at No. 3," said interim head coach David Anderton. "Dean has been playing some good tennis and is starting to find his confidence and consistency that he needs to be successful at the top of the lineup against the best teams in the country. Also, Chris is doing a great job of competing and finding ways to win after not getting much match play in the fall. Overall we need to do a better job of competing better as a team day-in and day-out. No matter who we are playing, where we are playing them, and when."
The Toreros play crosstown rival San Diego State on Tuesday at the Aztec Tennis Complex (12 noon).
