Toreros Upset No. 75 Arizona Wildcats, 5-2

San Diego, Calif. - The University of San Diego Women's Tennis team earned their third straight win to open up the 2009 Spring season by upsetting No. 75 University of Arizona 5-2 on Saturday. The Toreros remain undefeated while the Wildcats received their first loss of the Spring, falling to 5-1 overall.

The Toreros quickly jumped out ahead of the Wildcats by earning the all important doubles point. At No. 2 doubles, the tandem of senior Tammy Kevey and Maja Sujica downed Ariane Masschelein and Debora Castany, 8-4. Freshman Juliette Coupez and sophomore Samantha Mouly clinched the point for San Diego at No. 1 after defeating the Wildcats' pair of Danielle Steinberg and Sarah Landsman 8-6. Arizona earned their first match win on the day by winning at No. 3 doubles. Natasha Marks (#125) and Jane Huh defeated freshman Maria Raygada and Justine Perl 8-6 to close out doubles action.

To begin singles play, Raygada in two quick sets beat Huh, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5. Arizona picked up their first point on the day when at No. 2 Marks downed Mouly in two sets, 6-3, 6-1. The Wildcats then went on to even the score as Landsman in straight sets defeated Kevey, 6-2, 6-1.

But the Toreros were not about to see their home court advantage be waisted and earned the next two singles points as well as the match victory. San Diego received a straight set victory from junior Alexandra Demidova at No. 6 (df. Castany, 7-5, 6-2). Then Coupez at No. 1 clinched the match for the Toreros by earning a win over Steinberg in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. In the final match of the day after the winner had already been determined, Sujica at No. 3 capped off the strong performance by downing Masschelein, 6-4, 6-4.

After the match, Head Coach Sherri Stephens expressed her high expectations for the 2009 season. "It's not just that we are 3-0...it's that we are a team that is ready to compete and fight for a win."

The Toreros will return to dual match action this coming Monday, February 23rd at 1:30 p.m. to face the Rainbow Wahine of Hawai'i.
