San Diego, Calif. - The University of San Diego Men's Tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to the #60 University of Utah Utes Wednesday afternoon, Mar. 18th. With the loss, the Toreros end their two match win streak.
San Diego dropped the doubles point, giving the Ute's a 1-0 advantage going in to singles play. Playing on Court 3, freshmen Juan Devillier and Tom Wolff fell to the tandem, Benito Suriano and Stephen Jacobs, 8-5. San Diego would come back at No. 2 when junior Charl Wolmarans and freshman Nikola Bubnic fought a tough round against Timmy Allin and John Taylor, pulling out the win by a final of 9-8. But the Ute's would eventually go on to win the point, when at No. 1 the Torero sophomore pair of Nils Schive and Dean Jackson made a valiant effort but would ultimately surrender the deciding point to Wes Hancock and Phillip Eilers, 9-8.
San Diego would drop the first two singles matches, moving Utah to a 3-0 lead. Timmy Allin of Utah defeated freshman Jose Manuel Munoz, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6, and Devillier fell at No. 5 to Jason Smits, also in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Bubnic would give the Toreros their first point at No. 2, downing Phillip Eilers, 6-3, 7-5. But the Utes would clinch following soon after at No. 1, as Wolmarans was unable to notch a win against Wes Hancock, falling in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
The Torero's would split the final two matches with Utah, as Schive managed to push past John Taylor, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, but the Utes Benito Suriano would earn the last point against Wolff, 6-4, 7-5.
San Diego will be back in action at home this Saturday, Mar. 21st against Cornell at 12:30 p.m. PT.
