Nov. 19, 2010

SAN DIEGO, Calif.- University of San Diego men's tennis coach Brett Masi announced the signing of Ciaran Fitzgerald to a national letter of intent on Friday. Fitzgerald, from Wicklow, Ireland, will join the Torero tennis program in the fall of 2011-2012.

"Ciaran is a top notch player from Ireland," said Masi. "I am very happy that he is becoming a Torero next fall. He is going to be a great addition to the talent we already have here and is exactly the type of player and person we are looking for to keep building our tennis program."

Fitzgerald won Irish Junior Open championships in 2006 and 2007 in the under-14 and under-16 age groups, respectively, in addition to winning the Irish National Indoor championship in the under-18 division in 2009 as a 16 year-old. Fitzgerald garnered a #302 world ranking in January of 2010.

In addition to winning a singles title at a World ITF event in 2010 and three doubles championships between 2008 and 2009, Fitzgerald was selected as an Irish Senior International in September of 2010, where he competed in the Four Nations Tournament in Wales, U.K.

While prepping at Blackrock College in Dublin, Ireland, Fitzgerald is currently training with Irish Davis Cup players in addition to continuing his development with Irish national coach Gerry Cahill at the Tennis Ireland National High Performance Academy, which Fitzgerald has been a part of since he was 10 years old.
