Toreros Men's Tennis' Historic Season Ends at NCAA Sweet 16

No. 15 USD's late fight not enough on the road at No. 2 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – No. 15 San Diego Men's Tennis' unprecedented season came to an end in its first ever Sweet 16 on Friday night, being bested at national No. 1 and NCAA Championships two seed Texas, 4-1.

USD finishes with a 22-6 record, winning its fifth straight WCC Regular Season title and third straight WCC Tournament crown.

The hosts claimed the first point of the day with doubles wins on courts one and three, dropping the Toreros to 23-5 on the season in doubles action.

In singles play, San Diego battled to claim at least three games in all six first sets, six games in four, however, USD was on the wrong side of each of three pivotal first set tiebreaks.

Battling illness on court six, program veteran Lambert Ruland fell first as the Longhorns doubled their lead. Then, the freshman Vincent Marysko was bested on court four to make it 3-0.

As they have all season, the Toreros wouldn't go down without a fight. It was national No. 19 Oliver Tarvet who put USD on the board, claiming a powerful 6-4, 6-3 win over No. 3 Sebastian Gorzny on main court to strengthen his All-American case with a 21-2 record on the year.

The Toreros would need the remaining courts and battled on each. WCC Freshman of the Year Manvydas Balciunas quickly won his second set on court two. Sophomore Adrien Berrut fought to a tiebreak in the second set. On court five, however, redshirt-senior Stian Klaassen dropped the second set narrowly at 6-4 despite a valiant effort to see the match clinched at 4-1 Texas.

It marks the final match of legendary, storied career for Tarvet, Klaassen and Neo Niedner. For 2025 Wimbledon breakout Tarvet, he graduates a three-time WCC Player of the Year with three-plus All-American honors and a fall National Championship in doubles with Klaassen. Klaassen himself is an All-American four-time first team all-WCC in five seasons at USD. Niedner collected four all-WCC honors throughout his career.
