TEMPE, Ariz.- The University of San Diego women's tennis team had players participating in two different tournaments simultaneously on Friday, with the majority of the action taking place at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. The Toreros sent junior Juliette Coupez, freshman Anna Depenau, and junior Maja Sujica to Tempe, while sophomore Cara Brown stayed home to compete in the San Diego State Fall Classic II at Aztec Tennis Center.
Coupez led the way for the Toreros on day one of competition in Arizona, winning her opening match, 6-2, 6-3, over Michigan's Michelle Brycki. However, Coupez's momentum was halted in the next round when she was unable to pull out the victory in a close match, losing to Whitney Taney of Michigan, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(8).
The other Toreros did not fare well in singles either, as Depenau and Sujica both dropped their respective openers to Wolverine opponents as well.
Doubles proved more positive for USD, with the Toreros' top doubles pair of Coupez and Sujica cruising past Michigan's Michelle Sulahian and Mimi Nguyen, 8-3, in the first round.
Both singles and doubles action will continue on Saturday from Whiteman Tennis Center on the campus of Arizona State University.
Meanwhile, in San Diego, Brown was bested in her only match of the day by UC Irvine's Rebecca Kwan, 6-2, 6-2. Brown will face Vanja Radunovic of Washington on Saturday from Aztec Tennis Center.
