Toreros competing in Gifford Collegiate Championship

(San Martin, CA) - The 24th-ranked USD golf team finds itself in 8th place (10 teams) after the first of three rounds in the 6th Annual Gifford Collegiate Championship. With all six players scores counting towards the team tally, the Toreros shot a combined 380 today and were led by junior Alex Ching who fired an opening round 72 (tied for 5th overall). Host UCLA shot 367 and leads Stanford (368) and Washington (370). UCLA's Patrick Cantlay shot the low round of the day with a 5-under par 67.

Rounding out USD scoring is Gunner Wiebe (T33 at 76), Scott Brace (T47 at 77), Manav Shah (T47 at 77), Kenneth McCready (T52 at 78) and Jason Shano (T59 at 79). Second round play on the CordeValle Resort Course (par 72; 7,169 yards) continues Tuesday morning. Stanford is the defending team champion.
