SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Four University of San Diego women's basketball players scored in double figures paced by senior guard Sam Child's 18 to help the Toreros cruise past San Diego Christian, 94-49, Tuesday evening in an exhibition game at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Child led all scores with her 18 points on 8-for-14 shooting form the field, while junior guard Dominique Conners also had a great night going 7-for-7 from the field to score 16 points, while also pulling down five rebounds. Senior center Nya Mason was the third Torero to record double digits as she had 12 points on 6-for-7 shooting form the floor, and freshman post player Kameron Knutson added in 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting from the field. Senior forward Emily Hatch also had a big night for the the Toreros as she recorded a game-high 21 rebounds, while falling just one point shy of a double-double with nine points. As a team, USD shot 60.3 percent form the field and out rebounded the Hawks 53-25. Every Torero who took the court this evening scored at least two points.
In the first half, the Toreros came out hitting on all cylinders as a Mason lay-up ignited a 8-0 Torero run over the first three minutes of action. After the Hawks ended the run with a three-pointer by Brittany Robinson, a Mason lay-up jump started a 14-2 San Diego run that saw four different Toreros recorded at least one point to give USD all the momentum and a 22-5 lead. The Toreros never let up as they cruised through the first half dominating every aspect of the game top take a 49-27 lead into the break.
In the second half, it was more of the same, as the Toreros continued to fire on all cylinders and quickly built up a 30-point lead at 64-34 with 12:20 to go. USD never looked back as they went on to build up their lead to as many as 46, before settling for a 94-49 win over the Hawks.
The Toreros will open the 2010-11 season on Monday when they travel to Stockton, Calif. to take on the University of the Pacific in a 7 p.m. non-conference game inside of the Spanos Center.
