LOS ANGELES - The 66th-ranked University of San Diego women's tennis team earned an important conference victory today, downing Loyola Marymount University, 6-1, at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The Toreros increase to a dual mark of 11-10, while the Lions drop to 4-15.
San Diego got things started on the right foot by winning the doubles point after taking two of three contests from LMU. Laura Claus and Justine Perl took the first triumph with relative ease, 8-0, at Court #3 over the Lions' pairing of Melissa Valenzuela and Audrey Bulkley. Juliette Coupez and Maja Sujica wrapped up the point at Court #1, shutting down Shuana Morgan and Bliss Nixon, 8-3.
The Toreros, who switched things up a bit at the 4-6 slots, would go on to take five of six singles contests to close out the dual match by a final of 6-1. Four of the five victories came in straight sets.
Alexandra Demidova was the first Torero to complete her match, eclipsing Elisaveta Pironkova, 6-3, 6-2, at Court #4. Soon after, Sujica at Court #3 knotted up the third consecutive point by closing out Morgan, 6-1, 6-2. Locking in the win at Court #2, Claus with efficiency upended Valenzuela, 6-3, 6-3.
Marite Raygada and Coupez also received victories for San Diego at Court #5 and #1, respectively. Raygada, now 16-4 in dual match competition, shut out Nixon, 6-1, 7-6, while Coupez earned her second victory of the day after downing Jasmin Heckel in three sets, 6-7, 6-3, 10-3.
The Toreros close out the 2010 regular dual match season against cross-town rival, San Diego State, next Monday, April 19th. First serve is set for 4 p.m. PT.
