SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego women's tennis team got off to a perfect start to the 2011 season with a 7-0 sweep of the visiting Cal State Fullerton Titans Saturday afternoon from USD's West Courts. The Toreros start the season 1-0, while the Titans drop to 0-1 with the loss.
USD was led in No. 1 singles by sophomore Laura Claus, who defeated Tiffany Mai handily 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Stephanie Hoffpauir got her Torero tennis career started on the right foot with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Malorie de la Cruz, while fellow freshmen Josymar Escalona and Anna Depenau also won their respective singles matches, both by scores of 6-3, 6-1. Escalona defeated Morgan McIntosh and Depenau took down Megan Sandford.
Rounding out the bottom of the Toreros' ladder was junior Maja Sujica, who cruised past Karina Akhmedova 6-1, 6-0, and junior Marite Raygada earned a 6-0, 6-0 sweep over Monica Rodriguez.
In doubles action, Claus and Escalona teamed as USD's No. 1 pair to beat Mai and Rodriguez 8-1. Hoffpauir and Depenau handled Sandford and McIntosh 8-1, while Sujica and sophomore Cara Brown defeated Akhmedova and de la Cruz 8-1 as well.
The victory marks the fourth consecutive season in which the Toreros have defeated Cal State Fullerton in a season-opener and the second straight year they won by a score of 7-0.
The Toreros return to action next Saturday, Jan. 29th when they travel to Los Angeles, Calif. for a tournament featuring UCLA, Pepperdine, and Sacramento State with match times still to be determined.
