LOS ANGELES, Calif.- The University of San Diego women's tennis team lost to the #5 UCLA Bruins 4-0 on Saturday afternoon from the Los Angeles Tennis Center in the opening match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Toreros (1-1), ranked 67th coming into the match, were unable to snap their all-time losing streak to the Bruins (3-0), which got extended to 12 matches with the loss.
UCLA snatched up their first doubles win in the match with the 57th-ranked combo of Courtney Dolehide and Andrea Remynse defeating USD's Juliette Coupez and Maja Sujica 8-5. Coupez and Sujica came into the match boasting the Toreros' best doubles record on the year at 4-2, but were saddled with their third loss of the season.
The Bruins wrapped up the doubles point as Maya Johansson and McCall Jones topped Anna Depenau and former-Bruin Stephanie Hoffpauir 8-4 at the No. 3 spot in the lineup.
On the singles side, the Toreros were unable to build up any steam as Depenau dropped her singles match to Carling Seguso 7-5, 6-2 and Dolehide, ranked 36th, put down Torero freshman Josymar Escalona 6-1, 7-5.
UCLA clinched the victory when Remynse dispatched sophomore Laura Claus, playing at the No. 2 position, 6-3, 6-3. Claus, who is tied for the team lead with five singles wins on the year, drops to 5-3.
The Toreros move on to face #43 Pepperdine on Sunday, Jan. 30th at 10:00 a.m. P.T. in the consolation match.
