NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.- In their first competitive racing this fall, the University of San Diego women's rowing team put together a solid day at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival on Sunday. The Toreros had a total of 10 boats in three different races competing against top programs like UCLA, Stanford and Oklahoma.

While battling cloudy weather and slightly windy conditions, USD had three Varsity Eights in action on Sunday, with the best finish coming with the Varsity Eight A (Cox: K. Soper, L. Dornes, M. Geesman, B. Lamb, J. Travis, T. Albertini, H. Whitney, L. Rollins, V. Ross) in at 18:06, good for sixth place.

The Women's Open 4+ featured four varsity boats from USD. The Toreros' top boat took third place in that race with a time of 20:04.

Meanwhile, tying for the best finish of the day was the Novice Eight A (Cox: E. Mayer, S. Romine, A. Gabbard, T. Maxwell, K. de Salvo, R. Taylor, W. McCormack, K. Bosch, B. Webster), who took third at 19:32, coming in less than a second behind USC (19:07) and UCLA (18:53).

Overall, the regatta was a chance for the Torero crew to gain some valuable race experience and compete against quality competition. USD is back in action for the San Diego Fall Classic on Mission Bay next Sunday, Nov. 13th.
