TUCSON, Ariz.- The University of San Diego men's tennis team defeated No. 43 Arizona 6-1 on Sunday afternoon from LaNelle Robson Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Arizona. The victory gives the Toreros (6-2) some redemption after a 5-1 home loss last season to the Wildcats (3-2).
The match started out in USD's favor as the Toreros' seventh-ranked doubles duo of Dean Jackson and Patrick Pohlmann took down Geoff Embry and Giacomo Miccini 8-3. The victory improved Jackson and Pohlmann's doubles record to 13-3.
The Wildcats answered, however, with an 8-6 victory at No. 2 with Jason Zafiros and Andre Vidaller topping Nikola Bubnic and Nils Schive.
USD came back to clinch the doubles point when Clarke Spinosa and Thibaut Visy earned their sixth doubles win of the year by defeating Borja Malo and Jay Goldman at No. 3 by a score of 8-6.
The Toreros put together a near-flawless singles performance after their doubles success by winning the first four singles matches, jumpstarted by Spinosa's 6-3, 6-1 win over Miccini at No. 4. Spinosa improved to 14-4 in singles on the year.
USD followed that with Pohlmann taking the next match handily with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Zafiros, while Bubnic clinched the match for the Toreros with his straight sets 6-3, 6-2 victory over Andres Carrasco.
The Toreros did not let up, however, as No. 31 Jackson cruised past Goldman 6-3, 6-2 to tally the fifth USD point of the day.
The Wildcats finally got on the board with a win at No. 6 as Malo served freshman Emilio Mora his sixth loss of the season with a 6-1, 7-6 (5) defeat. In the end it was all Toreros, though, when Visy kept his solid play going with a 7-6 (6), 6-1 win, topping Vidaller at No. 5. It was Visy's 13th win in his last 14 singles matches, extending back to October 22nd.
"Our guys really got after it today and took control from the start," said USD head coach Brett Masi after the win. "That is a good team and to win in that way was very impressive. It gives us some good momentum going into Friday's match taking on San Diego State."
The Toreros will travel to face the Aztecs on Friday, Feb. 18th for a 5:00 p.m. contest.
