SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego men's tennis team earned their fourth consecutive victory by defeating 43rd-ranked Hawai'i at home on Thursday afternoon by a score of 7-0. The Toreros (7-2) cruised through singles play only allowing one match to go the full three sets, while the Rainbow Warriors (1-4) remain winless against USD in the all-time series.
The 22nd-ranked doubles pair of Dean Jackson and Patrick Pohlmann took care of business right off the bat by cruising past Danilo Casanova and Leo Rosenberg 8-1. At No. 3, Clarke Spinosa and Thibaut Visy did the same against Dennis Lajola and Jon Brooklyn, earning an 8-1 win and clinching the doubles point for the Toreros.
Nikola Bubnic and Nils Schive sealed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win over Jeremy Tweedt and Daniel Llarenas, earning their fourth win as a pair this season.
USD never let off the gas as they moved into singles play with Bubnic topping Tweedt 6-3, 6-1 and Visy defeating Casanova 6-2, 6-0, giving Bubnic his 15th singles win of the year and Visy his 19th.
Pohlmann clinched the Torero victory with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Rosenberg at the No. 2 position. Pohlmann improved to 9-6 with the win in only his second match at No. 2 this season.
With the win wrapped up, freshman Emilio Mora topped Spiker 6-1, 6-5 at No. 6, and 34th-ranked Jackson pocketed his 19th singles win of the year with a tight 7-6(8), 7-5 win over Lajola.
No. 85 Spinosa and Brooklyn squared off in the final match of the day, which was the only match to go three sets as Spinosa had to battle back from dropping the first set 5-7 to ultimately pull out the 7-5 second set win and the 10-4 tiebreaker to close it out.
USD improves to 3-0 against Hawai'i all-time.
The Toreros return to action on Saturday, Feb. 26th when they face their first West Coast Conference opponent in Loyola Marymount for a 1:00 p.m. home match.
