Trojans Take Down Toreros, 5-2

Feb. 25, 2011

SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego women's tennis team had its four-match winning streak snapped by the Southern California Trojans on Friday afternoon from USD's Hogan Tennis Center by a score of 5-2. The 27th-ranked Toreros (5-3) battled back after losing all three doubles matches, but the 17th-ranked Trojans (7-1) proved too strong in the end.

The Trojans swept doubles play by winning each match by a score of 8-5 as their 11th-ranked combo of Maria Sanchez and Kaitlyn Christian topped Stephanie Hoffpauir and Juliette Coupez, No. 16 Valeria Pulido and Alison Ramos defeated Josymar Escalona and Laura Claus, and Lyndsay Kinstler and Danielle Lao earned the win over Anna Depenau and Maja Sujica.

The Toreros tried to take back the momentum by winning the first singles match of the day with Coupez beating Ramos 6-4, 6-3. USC answered, however, as Christian tallied the second Trojan point with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Laura Claus.

USD bounced back with a win on court six as Sujica earned her fifth singles win of the year, a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Cristala Andrews. However, the win would prove to be the last for the Toreros as Pulido would go on to take the match at No. 5 over Depenau 6-3, 7-6(5) and No. 25 Lao clinched the match for the Trojans with a 0-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Escalona.

With the match wrapped up, the attention turned to court one, where Hoffpauir, ranked 66th, was attempting to upset No. 1 Sanchez. After taking the first set 7-5, Hoffpauir and Sanchez battled back and forth until Sanchez ultimately pulled out the three-set victory by taking the second and third sets 6-4, 6-3, respectively.

The Toreros set their sights on Boston College, who they will face at home on Tuesday, March 8th at 10:00 a.m.
