Feb. 27, 2011

SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego men's tennis team captured its fifth-consecutive victory with a 7-0 sweep of West Coast Conference foe Loyola Marymount Sunday afternoon from the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. The Toreros' (8-2, 1-0 WCC) five-match winning streak is their longest since 2007, when they also won five straight, while the Lions (3-6, 1-3 WCC) dropped their sixth-consecutive contest.

Dean Jackson and Patrick Pohlmann, ranked 22nd in doubles, got the day started for USD with an 8-4 win over Nicholas Bjerke and Daniel Simko, improving their record to 15-3 combined with the fall.

Thibaut Visy and Clarke Spinosa clinched the doubles point for the Toreros by defeating Tyler Gotshall and Tom Price at No. 3 by a score of 8-3 and Nils Schive and Nikola Bubnic handled Sebastian Bustamante and Alex Wilton 8-5 to finish off the doubles sweep.

Singles play was all USD as 85th-ranked Spinosa topped Simko in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 to earn the first Torero singles point. Spinosa has now won 10 of his last 11 singles contests.

Jackson, ranked 34th coming into the match, followed that up by breezing past Aris Andreasian 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 and earning his 20th singles victory of the year.

Pohlmann clinched the win for the Toreros with his 6-0, 6-1 handling of Bustamente at No. 2 and Bubnic defeated Bjerke 7-5, 6-3 to keep the USD momentum going.

Closing out the victory was Visy, playing just his second match at No. 4 this spring, who earned a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Wilton, and freshman Emilio Mora, who improved to 11-6 by defeating Price 6-7(2), 6-0, 1-0 (10-3).

"I was most impressed with how our guys kept their competitive edge all match long," said USD head coach Brett Masi after the match. "I've been happy with their competitive mindset and the sense of urgency they're showing, like they have something to prove, and that's the kind of approach that will make us better as we move on."

USD welcomes Rice to town for a midweek matchup on Wednesday, Mar. 2nd at 1:30 p.m.
