SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- The University of San Diego men's tennis team wrapped up their weekend with a 6-0 sweep of No. 62 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon in Santa Barbara. The 47th-ranked Toreros (4-2) bounced back from a loss to No. 2 USC yesterday to end their brief road trip with an even 1-1 record. Meanwhile, the Gauchos drop to 1-4 with the loss.
The teams did not play doubles, but junior Patrick Pohlmann got the Toreros started with the first singles win of the day, a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Mathieu Forget. 31st-ranked Dean Jackson followed suit as Alex Konigsfeldt kept it close by winning the second set 4-6 after dropping the first 6-4, but Jackson closed out the victory with a 6-1 third set, earning his 16th singles win of the year, tying him for the team lead.
With the momentum clearly in USD's favor, junior Nikola Bubnic topped Benjamin Recknagle in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, improving his record to 12-5. Playing at No. 4 for the first time this season was sophomore Thibaut Visy, who clinched the victory for the Toreros with his 6-2, 7-5 win over Taylor Chavez-Goggin, and in the process tallied his 16th singles win of the year. Visy and Chavez-Goggin met previously on October 24th at the ITA Southwestern Regional Championships, when Visy came out on top of a 6-7, 6-4, 10-5 match.
Closing it out for USD was freshman Clarke Spinosa, who improved to 12-4 with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Max Glenn at No. 5, and fellow freshman Emilio Mora, who topped Philip Therp 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) for the final win of the day.
With the victory the Toreros set their sights on New Mexico, whom they will face next Saturday, Feb. 12th at 12:00 p.m. when they travel to Tucson, Ariz. for a pair of dual matches with the Lobos and the University of Arizona Wildcats.
