MORAGA, Calif.- The University of San Diego women's tennis team dropped a West Coast Conference match to the 48th-ranked Saint Mary's Gaels 5-2 on Sunday afternoon from the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex. The 26th-ranked Toreros drop to 7-4 (1-2 WCC), while the Gaels improve to 6-7 (3-0 WCC) with the win.
The Toreros notched the first victory of the day as Laura Claus and Josymar Escalona, the WCC's February Co-Players of the Month for doubles, topped Alex Poorta and Anna Chkhikvishvili 8-3 at No. 2.
However, Saint Mary's would go on to win the next two doubles contests to capture the doubles point when their 72nd-ranked duo of Catherine Isip and Laurie Gingras defeated No. 70 Juliette Coupez and Stephanie Hoffpauir 8-5 and Jenny Jullien and Claire Soper took down Maja Sujica and Anna Depenau 8-4 at No. 3.
The Gaels opened up singles play with a victory at No. 1 when No. 60 Poorta earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Hoffpauir, ranked 96th. Depenau then lost to Soper, 6-4, 6-4, before Claus posted the first USD singles win of the day in beating Chkhikvishvili 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(4) at No. 3.
Saint Mary's halted the Torero momentum, though, by clinching the match when Jullien outlasted Coupez 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
Sujica grabbed another singles win for the Toreros at No. 6 by defeating Alita Fisher 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 and improved to 6-0 in dual singles play on the year.
The Gaels would wrap up the win with Isip's victory over Escalona, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The Toreros return to action on Wednesday, March 16th when they host Princeton for a 10:00 a.m. match.
