SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The 25th-ranked University of San Diego women's tennis team swept the Princeton Tigers 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon from the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. The Toreros (8-4) took care of singles play without a match going three sets, while the Tigers (7-7) were hampered by two defaults due to an undermanned lineup.
The Toreros opened doubles play with a one-match advantage as Princeton was unable to field a No. 3 doubles team and subsequently had to default that match.
At No. 1, Stephanie Hoffpauir and Juliette Coupez dropped their doubles contest to Hilary Bartlett and Taylor Marable 8-6 before the Toreros' No. 2 combo of Josymar Escalona and Laura Claus defeated Rachel Saiontz and Monica Chow 8-6 to wrap up the doubles point for USD. The victory was the fourth-straight for Escalona and Claus.
In singles play USD again started with a one-match edge since Princeton did not have a competitor at No. 6.
With the momentum in their favor, USD got a win from Claus at No. 3 over Marable by a score of 6-4, 6-0. Freshman Anna Depenau followed that up with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Katherine Flanigan at No. 5, improving to 9-3 in dual singles play in the process.
Hoffpauir, ranked 74th in singles, kept it up by topping Bartlett 6-2, 6-2, while Escalona earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Saiontz at No. 2.
Coupez closed out the sweep for the Toreros with her 6-4, 6-2 win over Chow.
USD returns to action on Saturday, March 19th when they play Denver in a match being played at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club at 10:00 a.m.
