SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego men's tennis team advanced to the championship match of the Hilton Mission Valley Spring Classic with a 4-3 win over East Tennessee State on Friday afternoon from the Aztec Tennis Center at San Diego State University. The 20th-ranked Toreros (13-2) earned their 10th-straight victory, while the Buccanneers (9-6) move on to play in the third/fourth-place match tomorrow morning.
Dean Jackson and Emilio Mora notched a victory for the Toreros at No. 3 doubles by beating Juan Ramirez and Robin Akser 8-5, but ETSU captured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2.
The Buccaneers went on to post the first singles win of the day when Jeremy Bonnevalle took down Nils Schive 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6.
USD bounced back, however, winning the next three singles contests as No. 30 Jackson earned a 6-4, 7-5 win over Grega Teraz, Nikola Bubnic defeated Sander Gille 7-6(2), 6-4, and No. 83 Clarke Spinosa topped Jesus Bandres 6-4, 6-3.
Mora dropped his singles match at No. 5 to Charles Bottoni 6-7(7), 6-1, 6-1, but sophomore Thibaut Visy clinched the victory with his tight 7-6(0), 4-6, 6-4 win at No. 4 over Ramirez.
The Toreros will face the winner of the Purdue and San Diego State match taking place Friday afternoon on Saturday, March 19th at the Aztec Tennis Center at SDSU at 2:00 p.m. ETSU moves on to face the loser of the Purdue/SDSU match at 10:00 a.m. at SDSU.
