SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego women's tennis team topped the Fresno State Bulldogs 6-1 on Saturday afternoon from USD's Hogan Tennis Center. The 23rd-ranked Toreros (12-4) won their first match over Fresno State since 1999, a string of six contests, while the Bulldogs, ranked 70th coming in, drop to 5-9 on the year.
The Toreros started strong in doubles play with their No. 1 pair of Juliette Coupez and Stephanie Hoffpauir posting an 8-5 win over Marianne Jodoin and Laura Pola. Maja Sujica and Anna Depenau followed that with an 8-5 win of their own over Mary Abby Hayley and Bianca Modoc to clinch the doubles point.
At No. 2 was Laura Claus and Josymar Escalona, who narrowly dropped their doubles contest to Melissa McQueen and Olga Kirpicheva 9-7, marking just their second loss of the season.
In singles, the Toreros went on to win the first four contests handily as Sujica tallied the first win, a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Kirpicheva at No. 6, which improved Sujica's dual singles record to 9-1 on the year.
Coupez then won her fifth-consecutive singles match by defeating Hayley 6-0, 6-2, while Claus clinched the victory for the Toreros with her 6-1, 6-4 win over McQueen at No. 3, improving her to a team-best 16-6 combined singles record this season. Depenau followed with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Modoc at No. 5, her 16th of the season as well.
Jodoin, ranked 99th, recorded the lone win for the Bulldogs on the day by earning a 6-4, 6-4 victory over No. 74 Hoffpauir at No. 1.
Escalona, who won the first set against Pola 6-2, closed it out by battling back from losing the second set 3-6, to post a 10-3 tiebreaker en route to her eighth singles win of the year.
The Toreros return to action Sunday morning with a 10:00 a.m. contest with West Coast Conference foe Santa Clara at Hogan Tennis Center.
