SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego women's tennis team swept the visiting Santa Clara Broncos 7-0 in West Coast Conference action from Hogan Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. The 23rd-ranked Toreros (13-4, 2-2 WCC) improved to 10-0 all-time against the Broncos (12-3, 3-1 WCC) with the win.
USD's No. 3 doubles tandem of Maja Sujica and Anna Depenau got things started for the Toreros with a flawless 8-0 win over Kacie Wagner and Kimmi Cox. Josymar Escalona and Laura Claus bounced back from a rare doubles loss on Saturday to post an 8-3 victory at No. 2 over Maggie McGeorge and Kelly Lamble, clinching the doubles point for USD.
Meanwhile, No. 1 pair Stephanie Hoffpauir and Juliette Coupez were forced to retire due to injury with the score at 6-5, giving Katie Le and Jessica Agra the lone Santa Clara victory of the day.
With the lineup shuffled slightly following doubles play, the Toreros dominated singles action as Claus won her ninth-straight match to lead it off, a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Lamble at No. 2. Coupez, playing her first match at No. 3 this season, then defeated Alex Zaniewski 6-4, 6-0 to put USD up 3-0.
Earning the clinching victory on the day was Depenau, who won her 17th singles match of the season by defeating Wagner 6-1, 6-2. USD kept the pressure on even with the win in hand as Escalona, filling in at No. 1 for Hoffpauir, won 6-2, 6-4 over Le.
Wrapping up the victory for USD was Sujica, who improved to 10-1 in dual singles play with her 6-1, 6-2 win over McGeorge at No. 5, and freshman Idil Haciraifoglu, who topped Agra in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in her season debut.
The Toreros return to action next Saturday, April 2nd, with a 10:00 a.m. match against Loyola Marymount at the Hogan Tennis Center.
