LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The USD softball team put the hurt to host UNLV Rebels in their opening game of the Eller Media Classic on Friday afternoon as the Toreros won 8-5. They followed that win with a 8-0 win over Troy University run-ruling them in six innings with a two-hitter by Healy.

"We had a great approach at the plate today," said head coach Melissa McElvain. "We swung the bats well as Jessica [Tieszen] sparked us with two homeruns in her first two at-bats."

San Diego improves to 4-3 overall after day one at the UNLV tournament.

In USD's opening game, the Toreros recorded 14 hits overall with junior Jessica Tieszen leading the way hitting 3-for-4 with two runs, three RBI, and two homeruns. Taylor Hensley and Kylie Ordos both scored doubles for USD.

San Diego took a quick lead in the second inning as Tieszen lead off with her first homerun of the game taking a 1-0 lead. UNLV responded with a run tying the game followed by four runs in the third inning to take a 5-1 lead over USD.

San Diego would battle back picking up two runs in the fourth inning cutting the lead to 5-3 and two more runs in the fifth inning tying the game at 5-5. Tieszen picked up her second homerun during the fourth inning while teammate Kylie Ordos hit a double helping out the Toreros offensively.

In the seventh inning, San Diego's bats came alive as they recorded three runs on five hits lifting USD to an 8-3 lead and the victory. UNLV was unable to respond to the three-spot by the Toreros in the bottom half of the inning as USD went on to win 8-5.

Cassidy Coleman had the start for the Toreros pitching 2.2 innings with two strikeouts. Jenny Lahitte replaced Coleman working 4.1 innings with four strikeouts picking up the win improving to 1-1.

In the nightcap, the Toreros put up four runs in the second inning including a double by Jenny Lahitte. San Diego posted two more runs to take a 6-0 lead followed by Jessica Tieszen recording her third homerun of the day in the fourth inning lifting USD to a 7-0 lead. In the sixth inning, Celeste Soto recorded a double putting her in scoring position and was sent home on a Kylie Ordos single enforcing the run-rule as the Toreros took down the Troy Trojans 8-0.

"The team rallied 28 hits on the day which is quite an accomplishment," said McElvain.

San Diego returns to Eller Media Stadium for day two of the tournament at 9:00 a.m. opening with the Bradley University Braves followed by a 3:45 p.m. match up with San Jose State.
