SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind a 17-hit performance from the Toreros offense and a dominating performance on the mound from sophomore right-hander Calvin Drummond, the University of San Diego baseball team snapped its season-high nine-game losing streak with a 11-3 win over the University of New Orleans Friday afternoon in a non-conference game at Cunningham Stadium.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 5-17 overall, and with the loss the Privateers drop to 1-24 overall and run the nation's longest losing streak to 23 games.
New Orleans got on the scoreboard first, as they managed to push across one run on one hit in the top of the first inning. Beau Boudreaux led off the game with a triple to right field, and two batters later, Nolan Church drove in Boudreaux with a RBI sacrifice fly to left field to vie UNO a 1-0 lead.
The Toreros then responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first inning. Back-to-back-to-back singles by Dillon Checkal, Kevin Muno and Kris Bryant loaded the bases with no outs. Zack Kometani then drove in Checkal with a sacrifice fly to left field, tying the game at 1-1.
The Toreros offense then really got to the UNO starter Zach Kelt, as they exploded for a five-run bottom half of the second inning. Cory LeVier led off the frame with a double to right centerfield. Bryan Haar then singled to right field, but was thrown out at second base, while LeVier moved to third on the single and scored on a fielding error by the center fielder to give USD a 2-1 lead. Then with two outs, Julian Duran kept things going, as he was hit by a pitch, then stole second and came home on a Checkal RBI single to centerfield. Muno then launched his first home run of the season, as he hit a two-run blast over the left field fence to clear the bases. USD wasn't done just yet, as Bryant was hit by a pitch, then stole second and came home on a Kometani run-scoring double down the right field line to cap the scoring for the inning and give USD a 6-1 lead.
The Toreros then added three more runs in the bottom of the third inning, and two more in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach with a 11-2 lead. The Privateers would then score one run in the top of the fifth inning on a Steffan Farrell solo home run to put the game at its final of 11-3.
Offensively for the Toreros, Muno led the way as he went 3-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. Duran also had a good day as he went 3-for-3 with one RBI, while Checkal went 3-for-5 with three RBI and both Kometani and Haar also had a pair of hits each.
Drummond (2-4) picked up his second win of the season, as he completely shut down the UNO bats. After surrendering a lead-off triple in the top of the first, he then mowed down the Privateers, as he then retired six if the next seven batters, including striking out the side in the second inning. For the game, he scattered seven hits and allowed three runs, while recording a career-high seven strikeouts. UNO's starter, Kelt (1-5), was saddled with the loss for the Privateers, as he allowed six runs on eight hits in 2.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday as they continue this four-game series with New Orleans in a double-header. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
