IRVINE, Calif. — On Tuesday, a couple of teams squared off at Anteater Ballpark, coming off home weekend conference sweeps. San Diego baseball took all three games against Santa Clara during their West Coast Conference series at Fowler Park before making the trip up to UC Irvine, which swept UC Davis over the weekend.
Although USD continued its stretch of getting on the board first for the fourth consecutive game, the Toreros (12-18, 5-4 WCC) were unable to continue their winning streak, falling 13-5 to the Anteaters (15-18, 6-6 Big West).
San Diego scored twice in the opening frame on a two-out rally that began with reigning WCC Player of the Week Andrew Gauna, who ended a nine-pitch at-bat by being hit by a pitch. Then the Toreros got a double from Jayden Lobliner before a couple of run-scoring hits to the left side from Connor Meidroth and Gage Mestas helped them take an early 2-0 lead.
Logan Piper took the mound for San Diego in the midweek matchup in what marked his second start in a USD uniform. He retired the side in order despite giving up a leadoff hit before inducing a double play and a groundout.
However, a series of walks led to the Anteaters' first run in the bottom of the second, and free passes loomed large as UCI put together a nine-run fourth inning.
The Toreros answered back in the sixth on a bases-clearing double from Jayton Greer, scoring Martinez, Diego Gonzalez and Vincent Venverloh to cut the lead down to six.
Kyle Bade and Lucas Shannon were able to keep San Diego within striking distance by firing a couple of shutout frames. Aidan Gonzalez threw the ninth.
