Toreros Fall to Huskies 5-2 in ITA Kickoff

BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's tennis team fell in their season opener to the 28th-ranked Washington Huskies Friday afternoon by a score of 5-2 in the ITA Kickoff Weekend from Cal's Hellman Tennis Complex.

The 32nd-ranked Toreros got off to a slow start as Washington (1-0) captured doubles victories at No. 1 and No. 2 to win the doubles point. Anna Depenau and Maja Sujica, playing at No. 3, did not finish their contest against Natali Coronel and Riko Shimizu.

In singles, Washington's No. 1, Denise Dy, who came in ranked 10th nationally, defeated Stephanie Hoffpauir in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. USD (0-1) tallied their first victory when Juliette Coupez topped Capucine Gregoire, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3. Laura Claus followed that up with a win at No. 2 as she earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Samantha Smith that evened the overall match score at 2-2.

From there, however, it was all Huskies as Washington went on to post victories at No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6. Both Marite Raygada (No. 5) and Maja Sujica (No. 6) were able to claim first-set victories but were unable to close it out as Sujica's loss to Julija Lukic at No. 6 ended up being the clincher for Washington.

The victory for Washington served as vengeance for a USD victory last season at home when the Toreros upset the then-No. 15 Huskies 4-3 at Hogan Tennis Center. The loss for the Toreros was also their first season-opening loss in seven seasons.

USD moves on to face No. 36 UNLV Saturday morning at 10:00 am from the Hellman Tennis Complex in a rematch of last season's first-round NCAA Championships matchup.
