USD vs. Cal Results

BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's tennis team was shutout by No. 13 California 4-0 in the second and final match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Monday afternoon from Cal's Hellman Tennis Complex. The 27th-ranked Toreros (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season as their top two doubles teams fell along with their bottom three singles competitors.

USD's No. 1 and No. 2 doubles tandems each lost to ranked Cal pairs as Nikola Bubnic and Thibaut Visy fell to No. 5 Nick Andrews and Christoffer Konigsfeldt, 8-4 at No. 1, while Ciaran Fitzgerald and Patrick Pohlmann were dropped by No. 27 Carlos Cueto and Ben McLachlan, 8-3 at No. 2. The final doubles match went unfinished once Cal had wrapped up the doubles point.

In singles competition, the Toreros were unable to get any momentum going as their No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 players each lost in two sets, while the top three singles matches were not finished after Cal (3-0) had clinched the match with a win at No. 6.

The Toreros split their two matches in the two-day event after defeating No. 25 Minnesota 5-2 on Sunday. With the win, Cal earned a berth to the ITA National Team Indoors in February.

USD travels to Tulsa, Okla. for a 10:00 am PT match against Texas Tech at Tulsa's Case Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 4th. The Toreros will then matchup with Tulsa at 10:00 am PT on Sunday, Feb. 5th.
