HOUSTON, TX - The 31st-ranked University of San Diego men's tennis team followed up their win over Texas with a 5-1 victory over No. 52 Rice University on Saturday afternoon from the Galleria Tennis and Athletic Club. The Toreros won five of six singles contests on the day, while doubles ended up not being played.
No. 80 Patrick Pohlmann got the ball rolling for USD (7-4) with his 6-2, 6-3 win over Harry Fowler at No. 2. No. 102 Thibaut Visy followed that up with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Christian Saravia at No. 4. Playing at No. 3 was Clarke Spinosa, who topped Jonathan Chang in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
No. 63 Nikola Bubnic clinched the win for the Toreros as he went on to defeat Sam Garforth-Bles in the only three-set match of the day, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 1.
Rice (8-4) picked up their only win of the day at No. 5 where Michael Nuesslein defeated Victor Pugliese, 6-2, 6-2.
Wrapping up the day was Ciaran Fitzgerald at No. 6 with his 6-1, 6-2 win over Philipp Seifert.
The Toreros return home where they are set to host the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Spring Classic beginning on Thursday, Mar. 15th and running through Saturday, Mar. 17th.
