Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team came up just short in a 3-2 loss to Quinnipiac on Wednesday evening from the USD Softball Complex. On a relatively quiet offensive night for both teams only two Toreros registered hits with right fielder Lauren Tomey leading the way with a 3-for-3 performance and an RBI, while center fielder Dana Prelsnik went 2-for-3 and scored both USD runs.

The Toreros (11-11) struck in the bottom of the first when Prelsnik led off the inning with a double to left center, extending her hitting streak to a modest four games. She eventually came around to score with Taylor Hensley's RBI ground out to second base, putting the Toreros up 1-0.

Quinnipiac (10-5) answered in the top of the second when Ashley Heiberger scored on a two-out throwing error from third baseman Chloe Kaneko that pulled the first baseman off the bag.

Quinnipiac tacked on another run in the top of the third after Heiberger doubled to left center, plating Alex Alba and giving the Bobcats a 2-1 lead.

Both teams would trade scoreless innings until the bottom of the sixth when USD tied it at 2-2 on an RBI single to left field from Tomey that brought home Prelsnik.

The Bobcats would end up scoring the decisive run in the top of the seventh with Mina Duffy's RBI double to left center that put Quinnipiac up for good at 3-2. Kaitlin Healy (2-2) was tagged with the loss for the Toreros after throwing 6.1 innings, allowing three runs (2 ER) on six hits, while striking out two and walking five. Heather Schwartzburg (6-1) earned the win with her complete game where she allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts.

Alba went 3-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the Quinnipiac offense on the night.

The Toreros open up play in the San Diego Classic II on Friday when they host Quinnipiac again at 2:00 pm followed by a 4:30 pm contest against Valparaiso at the USD Softball Complex.
