Six Run Third Inning Spoils USD Lead in 11-9 Loss to Utah Tech

USD jumps out to 7-3 advantage before Utah Tech rallies to hand the Toreros a loss at the USD Softball Complex

SAN DIEGO — San Diego scored nine runs and held a lead through four innings but couldn't overcome a six-run third inning as Utah Tech rallied to win 11-9 Monday afternoon at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex. 

The Toreros jumped out to a 5-2 lead with a big first inning. Taylor Johnson doubled home Mallory Axline and set off a chain reaction — Kaylee Oh followed with an RBI single, and Abrielle Diaz capped the rally with a two-run single through the left side to push the lead to 5-2. San Diego added two more in the second, with Diaz picking up another RBI single and Janae Combs following with an RBI single of her own to stretch the lead to 7-3.

Utah Tech chipped away with a run in the second before erupting for six in the third, aided by a pair of errors at shortstop that extended the inning and allowed two unearned runs to score. The Trailblazers took a 9-7 lead after three.

San Diego responded in the fourth, stringing together an Oh single, a Delgado single, and a Combs RBI triple to deep center that tied the game at 9-9. But Utah Tech added runs in the fifth and seventh to pull away, and the Toreros went hitless over the final three innings. 

Oh led San Diego offensively with a 3-for-4 afternoon, scoring three times. Diaz drove in three runs on two hits, and Combs went 2-for-3 with two RBIs including the fifth-inning triple.

The Toreros will be back in action on Friday to resume West Conference play with a three game series on the road against Santa Clara. First pitch in the series opener from Santa Clara Softball Stadium is set for 6 p.m.
