SPOKANE, Wash. - The 23rd-ranked University of San Diego men's tennis team capped off its first weekend of West Coast Conference action with a 6-0 sweep at Gonzaga on Saturday afternoon from the Spokane Racquet Club. The Toreros opened the WCC slate with back-to-back wins after defeating Portland on Friday.
Against the Bulldogs, USD got out to a fast start with three doubles wins and did not lose a match all day. The Toreros (11-5, 2-0 WCC) opened the day with an 8-3 doubles win by Clarke Spinosa and Patrick Pohlmann at No. 1, their first dual match playing together this season. Nikola Bubnic and Thibaut Visy won 8-1 playing in their first match this season at the No. 2 position, while Andrew Carlisle and
Victor Pugliese capped off the doubles sweep with a 9-8(2) victory at No. 3. In singles, USD did not drop a set as No. 106 Pohlmann led the way at No. 1 with his 7-5, 6-2 win. No. 60 Bubnic posted a 7-6(2), 6-4 victory at No. 2 that gave him is 11th dual singles win of the year and seventh-straight victory, tying him with Pohlmann in both regards.
At No. 3, Spinosa claimed a 7-5, 6-2 win that was followed by No. 111 Visy's 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 4. In the No. 5 slot was Pugliese, who played an eight-point pro set and tallied an 8-2 win. Garrett Taylor filled the No. 6 position for the Toreros but his match was unfinished.
"This weekend was a good start to the WCC schedule," said head coach Brett Masi. "We got a couple good wins on the road and now we're looking forward to a couple very good conference opponents coming to our place in BYU and Pepperdine."
USD welcomes BYU to the Hogan Tennis Center on Saturday, Mar. 31 for a 12:00 pm first serve.
