SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's tennis team handed the University of Nevada a 6-1 defeat on Friday afternoon from the Hogan Tennis Center. The Toreros dominated on the day, winning every match except for one. In the process, USD (2-6) snapped a five-match losing skid.
Doubles play featured three Torero wins as Maja Sujica and Anna Depenau tallied the first USD victory with an 8-1 win at No. 2, improving their doubles record to a perfect 7-0 this spring in only their second match at No. 2 this year. Cara Brown and Stephanie Hoffpauir, playing in their first match as a pair, clinched the doubles point with an 8-2 win at No. 3, while Laura Claus and Juliette Coupez wrapped up doubles action with an 8-3 win at No. 1.
The Toreros kept Nevada (3-5) on the ropes in singles play with five-consecutive victories. The first USD win came with Claus' 6-2, 6-0 win over Juliette Legendre at No. 4. Claus had missed the previous two matches due to illness.
Depenau followed Claus with a 6-1, 6-0 victory of her own at No. 3, while Sujica clinched the win for the Toreros with her 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Faith Bassiouny at No. 6. Coupez improved on her team-best dual singles record (6-2) with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 1 before Marite Raygada notched a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5.
The only Torero loss came when Hoffpauir was forced to retire trailing 0-1 in the second set against Emma Verberne.
USD returns to action at the Hogan Tennis Center on Sunday, Mar. 11th with a 10:30 am first serve against No. 55 Sacramento State.
