SAN DIEGO – In a match that was closer than the final score indicated, No. 39 San Diego women's tennis was edged by seventh-ranked Pepperdine 4-0, a near four-hour battle at Hogan Tennis Center Friday afternoon. 

The Toreros were unable to replicate their magical upset of the Waves on the same Lester T. Vessell Championship a year ago that won the Toreros their first WCC Championship title in program history as the Waves claimed the doubles point and three singles wins to come out on top on Friday. 

Doubles came down to the wire as the two sides split courts two and three as the Torero freshman tandem of Maria Shmakova and Vilma Krebs Hyllested took a 6-3 win on middle court. A game away from claiming the crucial doubles point, the Toreros on court one couldn't hold out for a narrow 7-5 defeat, seeing the Waves take a 1-0 lead. 

In singles, Pepperdine claimed wins on courts three, four and finally a three-set win on main court by the Waves' 32nd-ranked Ziva Falkner that USD's Charlotte Keitel put up a good fight against, seeing the match through at 4-0. Krebs Hyllested was also just games away from upsetting national No. 19 Anastasiia Grechkina in three sets before the match had to be abandoned. Sophomore Anni Moll was also in the midst of a three set thriller on court six.
